Chiropractors are trained to take a history, do a physical exam, order x-rays if
necessary and diagnose a condition. In many circumstances, this is the first time a
patient has had such a thorough examination, let alone have their doctor actually
touch them to discover the cause of the problem.
Chiropractors often work closely with their patient’s family doctor, if they have
one, and / or refer directly to walk in clinics or to the hospital if the condition
warrants immediate medical attention.
Most times, though, your family chiropractor can begin care to alleviate the cause
of the problem within the first or second day. Chiropractors call the misalignment
of a spinal vertebra that is impinging on and altering the function of a nerve
a subluxation. Subluxations can be caused by injuries, traumas, poor posture
and may be genetically related to other family members. Because many spinal
conditions are genetic and can be inherited, most Chiropractors encourage their
patients to bring their family in for a spinal examination.
Conditions affecting the neck and lower back are often sited as responding very
well to chiropractic adjustments. These areas of the spine can refer symptoms
and pain to other areas of the body as well. Imagine a garden hose being pinched
and the lawn or garden starting to wilt because of lack of water. So it is with your
spinal nerves that can be stretched, squeezed, twisted, rubbed and irritated.
These nerves going to your muscles, joints and even vital organs will not function
at their optimal best and begin to cause tissue and eventually organ or muscle/
joint failure. Chiropractors see these kinds of conditions all the time and are the
best ones to see to alleviate the nerve problem, before surgery or powerful drugs
In addition to spinal adjustments, many Chiropractors take a serious interest in
their patient’s diet and lifestyle choices in order to help them heal faster and live
long and healthy.
Once the patient is out of their immediate pain and are on the road to recovery,
Chiropractors will encourage their patients to continue with wellness or
preventive care in order to prevent the original condition from coming back.
Many patients also want to know what they can be doing at home to slow down,
stop and even reverse the condition if possible. Exercises, dietary changes and
regular chiropractic check ups ( like going to your dentist) are recommended.
In this way the patient knows exactly how their spine is doing and with regular
checkups can catch small problems before they become big issues.
If you haven’t had a spinal check up recently, call your chiropractor and ask for
an update exam. If you do not have a chiropractor and would like to schedule a
new patient examination, please call my office. You can download my new patient
