That’s right! Headaches and migraines are a whole body experience. Just ask anyone that suffers with them regularly. That’s why a holistic approach gets such great results!
There are three categories of stress; physical, chemical and emotional. Chiropractors know that 97% of many headaches and migraine respond very well to care of the neck or cervical spine. From gentle massage, adjustments and pressure point therapy, many people get fantastic results. Add to this the careful management of dietary and chemical triggers through the headache/migraine elimination diet, the results are even better. Now add the relaxation techniques to reduce mental stress and you’ve pretty well got the majority of headaches and migraines licked. If this is not enough, there is always acupuncture – with or without needles ( I use a hand held pulsed device for those scared of or sensitive to needles), homeopathy especially when weather changes trigger off major headaches, and lastly looking at other triggers including some over the counter and prescription drugs. Some patients are not even aware of the rebound effect whereby headaches are caused by the withdrawal of their medication.
I had an interesting case where a gentleman came to see me for “ massive headaches” that curiously started after he began his high blood pressure pills. It turned out that he had a pork allergy and the capsule that his medication was in was derived from pork gelatin. Thankfully a pharmacist was able to help us identify the cause of his problem. Another good case is a patient that has told me that if she eats ripe bananas she gets a headache but if she eats green bananas she doesn’t.
One of the most important questions my staff and I go through with my new patients is the trauma history. We start with birth trauma to the newborn, then go up through sports injuries, car accidents, work related injuries and “others”, including concussions and being knocked out and the broken nose and teeth questions. Why? Many tension type headaches can be as a result of scar tissue –from injuries- that begins to contract over the years and gradually brings about headaches.
There is nothing like a thorough, comprehensive, professional consultation, examination, computer scan, and x rays to fully understand what may be causing your headaches and migraines. There is a free workshop coming up next week that will discuss these matters more thoroughly. Watch for the advertisements.
