A new study from the “Journal of Occupational and Environmental Studies” did something I’ve been hoping they’d do. They looked at 894 cases of low back pain that resulted in worker’s compensation claims. They compared the results in these cases based on whether the patients saw a medical doctor, a physical therapist, or a chiropractor. The results were nothing short of astonishing! The people who saw the medical doctors were 60% more likely than the chiropractors to have a disability recurrence. The people who were treated by the physical therapist were twice as likely to have a recurrence as the people who saw the chiropractors.
Please read that again!
The fact is chiropractors receive more training in treating low back pain without surgery than anyone on earth. This training, coupled with the incredible power of the chiropractic adjustment to help the body to heal itself provides patients with the best chance to obtain the best result in healing.
What amazes me is that every person in Canada and the USA is NOT referred to a chiropractor as a first contact when low back pain occurs!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not anti-MD or anti-physical therapist. I refer patients to both professions when it is appropriate, but what I do believe, and the facts support it, is that we’d have a healthier country and we would reduce health care costs if chiropractic were the first treatment option for all musculoskeletal injuries.
More patients consult with their medical doctor and walk in clinics for muscle and spine related conditions than any other reason. Wouldn’t it be great if the word got out that all these patients should consult with their family chiropractor first? Think of the reduction in waiting times to see your medical physician for medical reasons if all these patients went to a chiropractor where they could get immediate help or be referred elsewhere if appropriate!
In 26 years of practice, since coming back to Thunder Bay where I grew up, I’ve seen many unfortunate patients coming to see me as a last resort for their low back condition. If only they had come to see me earlier! The sooner the better, before the condition gets so bad or goes beyond the point where I can help and they need to be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon or neuro surgeon.
In my office, we have state-of-the-art computer spinal scanning using surface EMG as well as infrared thermal scanning. We utilize x rays and MRI reports, and a thorough history and physical exam in order to help us determine the best care for you. In addition to chiropractic services, we have cold laser therapy, acupuncture, massage therapists and a great number of professional products for both topical and oral administrations to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation that do not cause negative side effects.
I love it when studies come out like this in respected journals that support what I’ve been saying most of my professional life!
